Keeping Canines Cool This Summer!

Scruffs have created a fantastic new range of cooling mats that help keep your dog cool this Summer, with no freezing or refrigerating needed!

Simply unroll the non toxic gel filled mat and watch your beloved dog enjoy a place to sit that is 5-10 degrees cooler than room temperature for a whole hour. When the hour is up, simply leave the mat unused for another hour and it’s ready to be used again – it really is as simple as that!

You can view our range of cool mats online by clicking here.

Rockin’ Colour – New to Longacres

For when you want something a little bit more eye catching and bright in your garden, you need Rockin’ Colour!

Forget your quite little corner of peace and bliss; some people want a garden that the astronauts can see from the International Space Station! And we can’t blame them; everyone wants something different and there isn’t much that’s more different than our Rockin’ Colour range!

Our 20kg bags are currently £5.99 each or 2 for £10, so you can fill up your garden and make it a unique place to spend time in for less. You can view our range online by clicking here.

Bedding Plants at Longacres

We are well into the Spring season and before we know it Summer will be upon us, so make sure that you are well prepared to introduce lots of splashes of colours, scents, butterflies and bees into your garden by buying your bedding from Longacres, where we have hundreds of different varieties to suit every type of gardener and garden!

Antirrhinums, Petunias, Geraniums, Fuchsias, Impatiens, Lobelias, Marigolds and Nicotianas are just a small example of the bedding plants available to buy both in store or online from as little as £1.39 in a 9cm pot, £1.99 as a 6 pack of boxed bedding, or just £2.99 as a 12 pack of boxed bedding.

Our grower of bedding plants, Perfect Choice, have invested in a stylish, bright and bold new delivery van to transport all of our bedding plants to us ready to offer to you!

Perfect Choice New Van

Perfect Choice is a small family run nursery just 8 miles down the road from us in Locally grown plants have lots of advantages; it means less of a carbon footprint, plants are as fresh and perfect as they come, we save on distribution costs (which means a better price for you, our customer!), and finally we are supporting the local economy and of course another family run business – just like ours.

Visit us in store to view the full bedding range, or click here to view the online range.

Please note when buying online that you can mix and match all boxed bedding but the total number of boxes must be a minimum of 6.

Bedding plants – trip to the proving grounds

[please note – you can click on all images for larger size]

We had a brilliant day out to the ‘proving grounds’ this week – where the existing, new and even experimental spring, summer and autumn bedding plant varieties are tested; and growers, garden centres and other groups come to make buying choices for the next year. Even the entrance was awash with colour – the large beds of Zinnia and Phlox looked brilliant.

Phlox Bedding Plants

Everything is planted in beds stretching far and wide, with a change in variety in every row. They are watered just once, and then left to grow in whatever conditions the UK chooses to throw at them that season. It gives a very good indication of how they will cope with our climate – important as many of the experimental varieties are developed abroad in places such as Spain and the US west coast where conditions are ideal and just a little better than ours.

The verbenas were amazing – masses of colours to choose from, including some eye-catching hybrids. These two were favourites:

There were also rows of Salvias and an amazing mix of Zinnia as you can see below.

We found plenty of new varieties which will be available at Longacres next year (both instore and online, in our bedding plant section), along with some new hanging basket examples.

At the proving grounds they also included an interesting ‘invisible’ water feature in one of their show sections, and areas displaying the all of the plants in a variety of ways – beds, pots, hanging baskets, vertical walls and more.

We had a great time – many thanks to Royden, Mel and Wendy at Perfect Choice. This was my first trip up there, but I’m hoping I can make it every year from now on.
